Litton drew from the BBC Philharmonic the full range of colour, atmosphere and emotion this orchestra always gives a conductor who knows his stuff. It was a compelling experience until the very end, when Litton insisted on letting the bells of denunciation (in Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11) ring on and fade to silence.
